Steward positions comprise Shop Stewards and Unit Stewards. Unit Stewards are those Stewards who sit on the Local Executive Committee (LEC), also referred to as “the Executive”. Unit Stewards

Unit Stewards shall inform their Members of activities ongoing within their Bargaining Unit and Local 685. This includes inviting Members to join OPSEU/SEFPO, and welcoming new employees to the workplace and the Union. They shall also represent the concerns and suggestions made by Members in their portfolio to their Bargaining Unit and Local 685. In addition they shall attend Bargaining Unit Committee, Bargaining Unit Membership, Local Executive and Local General Membership meetings, become familiar with the provisions of the Collective Agreement that applies to them, assist and cooperate fully with the Local Health and Safety Committee.

Shop Stewards

Even if you don’t want to be on the LEC, all Members are encouraged to consider becoming a Shop Steward and nominating fellow Members to be Shop Stewards as well. Any signed Member can be a Shop Steward. The more the better! For example, what if you need to bring a union representative with you to attend a meeting with Admin?  Did you know: this does not have to someone on the LEC.  You can choose any Member you are comfortable with and who can best help advocate for you.  Your rep just needs to be a Shop Steward, and Shop Stewards can be voted in at any GMM meeting (including AGM meetings). Members need to be present when being nominated at the meeting.
